The AR12’s barrel features three equidistant gas ports at 12-, five- and seven-o’clock positions that feed into a collar that channels that tapped gas into a piston. The collar secures itself to a threaded portion of the barrel in the center and uses three hex screws to prevent it from coming loose during firing. A shooter adjusts this collar by removing and reinstalling it flipped 180 degrees. The normal, or “low” setting features a solid collar to direct all the tapped gas directly into the piston puck. The, “high” setting, on the other hand, incorporates three gas ports along the outside to help bleed off some of the excess gas produced by higher dram loads like defensive 00 buck.

The system functions almost like a short-stroke, piston-driven rifle, but that analogy isn’t directly applicable. When gas is tapped from the barrel when a round is fired, it fills the collar and propels the piston puck rearward. This puck rides along the barrel into a pair of transfer bars that connect to the bolt through a pair of holes in the receiver–almost like a modified pump-action forearm unlocked by a gas-driven piston.

As these transfer bars act on the bolt-carrier group, the bolt itself travels a short distance rearward, which drops a breech block that locks the action into the top of the upper receiver. Once the bolt is free, the whole carrier travels back, ejects the spent shell and returns to battery after scooping up a fresh round from the magazine.

Interesting enough, the skeletonized charging handle itself is directly connected to the bolt head, and as such, travels a short distance inside the bolt carrier during the unlocking and locking phase. While this is an ingenious operating method, how does it function in practice? As with nearly all semi-automatic shotguns, it depends.

The Omega’s gas system isn’t so “wide-open” to permit reliable function with low-dram, trap and skeet loads, nor should shooters expect it to be. In testing, the AR 12 struggled with low brass, birdshot, but ran fine on the low setting with three-inch turkey loads from Winchester. But the Omega AR 12 is more than just a shotgun with an interesting method of operation; it’s a feature-laden, pseudo combat shotgun with several great features, and also some blemishes.

On the positive side, the pistol grip and safety on the AR 12 are a near facsimile of those found on the AR-15. This makes them both comfortable and very familiar to shooters with experience behind the AR-15 series of rifles, carbines and pistols. Other AR-inspired aspects of the design include the magazine release and the bolt catch–both located where AR-enthusiasts would expect them. This goes a long way to better the ergonomics of the gun, as AR controls are familiar to the vast majority of American shooters. Also like the AR-15, the AR12’s receiver consists of two halves secured by push-pins. Though unlike the AR-15, these pins don’t sit flush and lack a capture detent, and can thus be removed entirely from the receiver without tools–which isn’t necessarily a good thing.

Normally, if secure enough with either friction or spring tension, this could easily be overlooked. However, the push-pins on the AR 12 protrude an extra quarter inch from the receiver. This would be cause for concern even if the gun featured some method of retention, primarily because it partially blocks access to the safety selector when a shooter adopts a high grip. The protrusion, combined with a lack of retention, means that shooters could potentially disassemble the receiver on accident if the gun is slung across a user’s chest and they’re wearing any gear.

What’s really strange about this part of the design is how, if the front pin is switched with the rear, the front will fit flush, while the rear pin will protrude a full inch from the receiver walls. This is a very odd design oversight that hopefully future iterations of the AR-12 will address.

Another concern I have with the design deals with its length of pull. The stock on the AR 12 is approximately four inches longer than a mil-spec M16A2 stock and is not adjustable. If that sounds huge, it should; the A2 is already too long for shooters who don’t blade themselves to the target and who aren’t over six and a half feet tall.

If this were a traditional-stocked shotgun, this would be a non-issue. But in a tactical-style shotgun like the AR 12, the oversized stock makes for an awkward, cumbersome front-heavy scattergun both because it shifts the weight of the gun further from the shooter’s arms, and because the stock is so long that shooters need to fully extend their support arm to reach the forearm. Anyone who has ever shot an ill-fitting feather-light shotgun can attest, an overly long length of pull dramatically increases the felt recoil of a shotgun. As a smaller-framed shooter, this is a deal breaker for me on this precise model. Thankfully, LKCI offers the same shotgun with an M4-style collapsible stock for shooters like myself who need their mag-fed shotguns in a handier package.
